Gwen McNeely-Herring applied for a Habitat home in 2004. Gwen’s commitment and faith in the Habitat program paid off when she and her sons, Xavier and Elliot, finally moved into their new house last June, built by Harmony Group churches. This is her story in her own words:
“I complained so much about my landlord but was unable to really afford to do anything about it. I did not qualify for Welfare or Food Stamps and was beginning to feel really low. Armed only with what my Mother had taught, “If you don’t work, you won’t eat”, I continued my struggle. I cried out to the Lord and accepted that He would make a way somehow, if I would only trust in Him.
My sister was a board member with Habitat for Humanity for a time and suggested I try for a Habitat home. “What could it hurt?” I thought. I had been denied on so many other fronts.
Low and behold! Habitat called me for an interview, and then scheduled a home evaluation. I didn’t know what they were expecting, but I knew some of the code issues with the house we were renting.
Then, in October 2004 I was notified that I had been approved for the program. I was then and still remain excited about it all. Goals you set for yourself in life get sidetracked , your spirit weakens, your heart breaks, then along comes the Habitat program to Bless you. All I can think to say is “WOW!, Look at my God work!”
My son’s are very excited and have been active from the beginning with sweat equity and community involvement. This whole program is good, I believe, for the whole man. It gets them outside themselves and puts them in touch with a community of people who are doing God’s will. This, my friends, will continue to be the cradle for the success of Habitat for Humanity Kansas City and all who come into contact with it!
May God Continue to bless each and every one of you at Habitat KC and the hosts of wonderful volunteers!”

Gwen’s story is the story of many individuals in our community. Each day they struggle to make a better life for themselves and their family only to be met with disappointments and setbacks. But, with the Lord’s loving hand, doors of opportunity can be opened if individuals are willing to believe and have faith in His plan. As the Bible says, in Psalm 25:5, “guide me in your truth and teach me, for you are God my Savior, and my hope is in you all day long.”
