Typical work week and day

The Habitat KC work week is Tuesday - Saturday.  We use volunteers on the construction sites Wednesday - Saturday, which allows Tuesdays to be used for staff meetings, trainings, inspections, inventory, and other administrative duties.

Each morning the construction staff arrives at the office early to prepare for volunteers.  Volunteers are expected to check in at 8 am (either at the office or directly on site depending on what arrangements were made in advance), complete any necessary paperwork, get name tags, and then be given work assignments.  We have several sites open on a given day, but can't guarantee a group can work on a particular house due to factors such as contractors, sponsor groups, inspections, and weather conditions. We appreciate all of our volunteers and thank you for the flexibility to work where you are most needed.

Lunch break usually occurs around 11:30, and volunteers are expected to provide their own meals.  You are welcome to bring coolers/bag lunches (ice is available at our office), have food delivered to the site or go out to eat.  Please note that there is absolutely no alcohol permitted on the construction sites.  Water jugs are provided on each site, and we ask that each of you bring your own refillable water bottle to use throughout the day rather than accumulating the trash of disposable cups.

If your group is interested in learning more about Habitat for Humanity Kansas City and would like to hear from a representative of our organization, we can arrange to have a speaker on site during your lunch break to discuss the Habitat mission, process and how the work that you are doing is furthering our efforts to provide decent, affordable housing. This representative could be a homeowner, volunteer, or staff member.  Contact the volunteer department at least 2 days in advance of your volunteer day to make arrangements.

The typical construction day ends around 3 pm, but this varies based on the tasks for that day.  If your task is almost completed, you may be asked to stay a little later to complete it.  Likewise, if you complete a task around 2:30, it makes sense to send you home earlier rather than start on something new for only a few minutes.  As long as the construction staff is notified, you are always welcome to leave when you need to.
