"Our love should not be just
words and talk;
it must be true Love,
which shows itself in action."

Building on Faith Week

Prayer Breakfast - September 24th,  8 am
Join us at Saint Paul's Episcopal Church for nourishment of the physical, emotional and spiritual variety. We'll have some fun, get to know each other better, share prayers from different traditions and learn how the faith community plays a key role in the ministry of Habitat KC. Congregations will be asked to consider how they will participate in the rest of the week (and into the future) as well. RSVP to mcaruso@habitatkc.org

Through the following week, we ask all congregations to consider how they can participate in the minsitries of Habitat for Humanity Kansas City.  Some suggestions include:

  • putting an insert into your bulletin for worship this week (these will be provided upon request)
  • saying a special prayer during worship (prayers can also be provided upon request)
  • have a speaker from Habitat KC talk with a class or with the congregation at large
  • do a food drive for the Habitat KC food pantry
  • prayerfully consider joining the team for House of Abraham or another build project
  • sign up for the Make Change campaign for one month (perhaps for Advent?)
  • host a potluck where photos and stories are shared by those in your congregation who have been involved with Habitat in the past

All of this builds up to World Habitat Day on October 4th. This is an official day declared by the U.N. General Assembly in recognition of the basic need for adequate shelter for all people everywhere.  More than 100 million people around the world are homeless, while millions more face severe housing problems (such as irregular or no electricity, lack of access to clean water, structural problems, etc.)   This is a day for grassroots action and for people to be united in their efforts to eradicate poverty housing.

Habitat KC will sponsor an online campaign through email and social networks for the week of World Habitat Day.  If you haven't already, we encourage you to "like" us on Facebook and help spread the word!

The House that Abraham Builds

The Christian, Jewish and Muslim communities came together with Habitat KC for the first time in 2007.  Working together, volunteers from all three Abrahamic traditions raised funds and gave their time to build a home for a Kansas City family. We completed a second project in 2009 and are gearing up to do it again in Spring 2011. In the process of working together on this project, we accomplish the following:
•    Promote interfaith fellowship
•    Increase awareness and support of Habitat Kansas City in a variety of faith communities
•    Promote partnerships between Habitat and participating congregations
•    Build a new Habitat home for a Kansas City family in need
We all agree that every one who falls asleep at night deserves a roof above her head – a place to call home, and are called to action through our faith. We are currently planning for the 2011 project. If you or your faith community would like more information, please contact Mandy at 816-924-1096 extension 105.

Youth United
Youth groups are a great place to begin a relationship with Habitat for Humanity Kansas City. Youth United is a national program of Habitat for Humanity International, and we just completed our first youth sponsored build in Spring 2010!

Great ways for youth to get involved are:

  • doing an aluminum can drive thru our Cans for Habitat KC program
  • the Make Change program
  • hosting a food drive for our pantry
  • making gifts for homeowner families
  • Act!Speak!Build! Week                                     and more!

If your youth group would like to get involved, please contact us.
